Redesign of the combustion cylinders and fuel injection system could allow diesel fuel to burn in a similar way to petrol when a spark ignites it. The aim is to obtain combustion across the whole cylinder volume in a short time rather than the prolonged burning that diesel engines usually have. Several researchers have shown this to reduce NO_x and other pollutants but it is very hard to achieve in practice and is still at a research stage.
