A Huddersfield non-profit organisation called Compact Education Business Services, offer support to local schools by running events, such as Mock Interviews, Enterprise Days and Careers Conventions, throughout the year. They invite representatives from local companies, colleges, universities and training agencies to volunteer to help run these events for them.
Volunteers from Cummins Turbo Technologies, Huddersfield get involved in many of the events, with mock interviews being one of the most popular. The purpose of the mock interview sessions is to help year 10 students develop a greater awareness of industry and career opportunities. Compact feels that it is vital that the students have contact with employers at this stage.
Volunteers from Cummins Turbo Technologies give a short general interview to individual pupils to help them develop their interview and communication skills. The volunteers are provided with a timetable for the session together with a basic application form for each pupil.
Evaluations show that the experience is very valuable for the students, in particular, they appreciate the opportunity to receive verbal and written feedback on what was for most of them, their first ever interview situation.
