The Huddersfield based “Safe Anchor Trust” operates as a non-profit making organization, which provides access to the waterways for disadvantaged members of the local community, including children, the physically and mentally disabled and the elderly.
Run completely by volunteers, Safe Anchor operates daily from their premises at the nearby Shepley Bridge marina and from here they run barge trips along the local canal; this gives both passengers and carers alike a welcome break and a pleasant day out.
The Safe Anchor Trust currently has three canal boats and they also work on the construction of a fourth larger boat, designed to cope with the ever increasing demand. This new boat project has required a great deal of hard work and determination from their volunteers, along with numerous donations and grants. The new boat will offer even better facilities for disabled and able bodied passengers alike and will set sail in 2010.
Over the past year and a half, Cummins Turbo Technologies volunteers have kindly supported the Safe Anchor project by helping to crew the canal boats and assist with negotiating the many lock gates along the Huddersfield canal system. Safe Anchor has found the support given by Cummins volunteers extremely useful and we have received extremely positive feedback both from Safe Anchor volunteers and Cummins volunteers alike.
Cummins engineering apprentices have also supported the Safe Anchor project by working on the design and construction of an access ramp, which will give better access to wheel chair users and able bodied passengers alike.
