Newsome High School, a secondary school within close proximity to Cummins Turbo Technologies’ Huddersfield facility, used the Apprentice as the theme for a Personal, Health, Social and Citizenship Education (PHSCE) enterprise day.
The Apprentice is a UK television competition that runs for twelve weeks every year. The show that has recently completed its fourth series, puts candidates through a gruelling series of business tasks and the first prize is the job of business tycoon, Sir Alan Sugar's, apprentice.
A total of 25 year nine students (aged 13 to 14) chose to take part in the marketing orientated activity. The students were divided up into four groups, each given the task of creating an advert for a gadget/novelty item. The children were asked to consider various elements including: Product development, creative thinking, pricing, distribution channels and promotional messages.
Cummins Turbo Technologies was asked to send an employee to judge the advertisements, provide feedback and choose a winning team. The standard of the campaigns was extremely high, especially when you consider that these children have had no specific business or marketing training.
The winning team showed exceptional creative skills when choosing the product that they wished to market. They originally started with a simple jar of baked beans and used this to develop an idea of a two-in-one lamp air freshener. The backed beans symbolised mini bean shaped crystals that reflected light. They then set a competitive pricing strategy, before starting work on creating a television advertisement.
James Moorhouse, Marketing Co-ordinator, Cummins Turbo Technologies presented the winning team leader with the Newsome School Enterprise trophy.
